Winter Skin Care 101

Filed Under Anti-Aging | Comments Off

Winter is just around the corner and the cold weather can play havoc on the skin. Every season we should evaluate our skin care routine. For instance, during the winter months the sebaceous (oil) glands produce less oil; thus for those with oily skin during the summer months they may find some relief from excess oil during the winter. However for those of us with combination skin or dry skin, the winter months dry out the skin even more.

Below are suggestions to help you combat dry skin in the winter time:

Hydrate the Face – both inside and outside. Winter is the perfect time for warm herbal teas loaded with antioxidants. Additionally, you should have a daytime moisturizer that still includes SPF and an emollient rich night time cream. Consider a lotion during the day and a cream at night time. Consider creams that contain shea butter, avocado oil, and olive oil for example. Avoid moisturizers that contain alcohol and synthetic preservatives, fragrances, and coloring, as these have a tendency to strip the skin of its natural oils and have a drying effect on the skin.

Cleansing – we all know that we should stay clear of harsh soaps on our face. We also know that we should avoid extremely hot showers, although they are so tempting when it’s zero degrees! Hot water strips the skin of its natural oils thus drying out the skin.

Cleansing for the body,  consider a body wash that is gentle and can enrich the skin such as aloe Vera. After your shower pat down with a lotion rich in moisture such as shea butter. If possible consider using fragrance- and dye-free laundry detergents and avoid fabric softeners. These chemicals embedded into our clothes can irritate dry skin.

Facial Cleansing – this is probably the most important part of your skin care routine. A good cleanser will thoroughly clean the skin and not strip away natural oils.

Facial Toning – this is a matter of preference. I have read and written several articles about the importance of toners, however there are some that say it is not needed. Personally, I love my homemade green tea and chamomile toner.

Body Exfoliate – A good exfoliate once a week will perk up skin and color by promoting circulation under the skin.

Facial Exfoliate – usually once a week. For an easy exfoliate, add a little cornmeal to your facial cleansing. You will notice a difference in the feel and look of your complexion.

Facial Masks – A facial mask can do so much to hydrate deep down into the lower layers of the skin. There are numerous types on the market.  Oatmeal, clay, avocado masks are so beneficial to the skin.

Lips – thin skinned and no oil producing glands in the lips. They take a beating during the winter. If you suffer from chapped lips all winter long consider a waxy lip balm to lock in moisture and protect before you got outdoors. Consider a lip balm that contain avocado, olive, or soybean, they soften and soothe, while vitamin A-rich shea butter promotes healing.

Hands and Feet – just like the face, if you do not wear gloves, the hands are exposed to the winter elements. They need moisture and protection to. Consider a day lotion with SPF and at night give them a treatment with some shea butter for example. The feet which never see the light of day during the winter months are still vulnerable to cracks and dry skin and prone to developing fungus. Consider a balm with peppermint or tea tree oil at night to fight fungus, and cover your feet with cotton socks. Additionally a weekly soak in Epsom salts does wonders to relieve foot ache, fungus and cleanse.

Natural Acne Treatments

Filed Under Anti-Aging | Comments Off

Natural acne treatments

Even if you don’t use treatment there are still plenty of things you can do to keep you clean of acne and pimples.

Foods you should be eating:
Eat a high fibre diet which is essential for keeping the colon clean and clearing the body of toxins and unwanted wastes.
Eat plenty of raw foods such as nuts, almonds and cashews.
Eat quality protein rich foods such as beans, peas, lentils, eggs and fresh cold water fish such as salmon, mackerel, herring and sardines.
Eat plenty of fresh fruit
Eat foods rich in zinc such as shellfish, soy beans, whole grains and sunflower seeds.

As you can now see there are plenty of good healthy food out there that will help your body stay clean and health but there are also plenty of food that you should stay away from in order to help reduce acne.
Avoid alcohol, butter, caffeine, cheese, chocolate, cocoa, sugar, cream, fat, fried foods, hot and spicy foods, hydrogenated oils and shortenings, margarine, wheat, soft drinks and vegetable oils.
Stay away from all processed and pre-packaged foods.
Also try to avoid sugar. The reason being is that sugar encourages oil production and provides food for bacteria and yeast to grow.

Apart from eating well and use products to help with keeping acne away there are also lifestyle factors that you can follow to help reduce acne and pimples.
Drink at least eight glasses of bottled or filtered water a day. It may seem a lot but it’s worth it and will help you feeling good.
Keep your skin as free of oil as possible and shampoo hair regularly.
Wash your skin twice daily but gently, never rub. Over washing, vigorous scrubbing and repeated touching of the skin can make acne worse by overstimulating the sebaceous glands causing them to produce more sebum. In other words don’t be to rough on your skin.

I hope this was helpful and for a complete step by step guide to cure your acne for good, click here

A skin spot by another name…

Filed Under Anti-Aging | Comments Off

Despite the moniker, old age is not necessarily the reason behind age spots: the darks splotchy areas common on the skin of people 55 or older. In most cases, the actual culprits behind these unsightly spots are the ultraviolet rays of the sun. Perhaps this makes the alternate term: sunspot, a more appropriate name.

Frolicking is the sunshine is not the only guilty pleasure that causes your skin to spot. Smoking, refined sugars, junky fast food and a diet that lacks vitamins are also accomplices in helping make these so called age spots appear on your skin, no matter how far away your retirement is. Perhaps they could be called poor living spots.

Lipofuscin is a granular pigment responsible for darkening our skin and causing these unsightly spots to appear. They come from body parts that aid in the digestion and elimination process, and are seen as “wear and tear” pigments that are given off. Our liver in one of the organs that produces lipofuscin, which is why the brown splotches on the skin are sometimes called liver spots.

Aside from being called age spots, sunspots and liver spots, these skin creatures have been also called brown spots and lentigo.  I do not know why they have never been called lipofuscin spots.

Since they are a skin condition the what ever you care to call them spots are easier to prevent than to get rid of. Eating a well balanced diet rich in antioxidants and low in saturated fats and refined sugars is good away from preventing the premature emergence of these unsightly spots. Orange vegetables like carrots and sweet potatoes and leafy greens like spinach and collard greens will help keep your skin looking nice well into old age. These foods are rich in powerful antioxidants which will help fight off the free radical damage caused by the sun.  General clean, healthy living and keeping yourself out of the sun are also good preventative measures.

If your fun or sun loving lifestyle has already caught up with you, there is some good news. There are ways to fade these spots away by using several available products on the market today. A mild bleaching agent, hydroquinone, will help you lighten these spots along with scars and freckles.  Topical Vitamin A, found is some prescription versions of hydroquinone, will also help fade the scar away.

If you have a really ugly age spot in a very conspicuous space you might have to get “serious” with a more invasive removal technique. Chemical peels with 80 % glycol acid solution have become a popular skin treatment. This procedure simply removes several layers of skin to help downgrade the appearance of the spot.

Laser resurfacing is another procedure that you might want to consider to get. Sophisticated Lasers are used to burn the spots away. Laser resurfacing, however, only works when there is a contrast of colors. Dark spots on dark skin are more resilient to the blast of a targeted laser than dark spot on light skin.

Most age spots are harmless, but some just might be pretending to be harmless dark skin spots.  If a spot thickens and changes color, itches or bleeds be sure to have a dermatologist check it out.  Irregular spots that grow and spread are early signs of skin cancer.
